Church of Sts. Sergius and Bacchus (Abu Serga)

A cavern crypt beneath this basilica is revered as a resting place of the Holy Family in Egypt.

One of the oldest Coptic churches in Cairo, Abu Serga is built over a crypt where tradition holds the Holy Family sheltered during their flight into Egypt. Its classic basilica plan, with a nave divided by marble columns and an ancient wooden screen, made it a template for Coptic church design.
