A jewel-box Mamluk mosque veiled behind Cairo's most intricate wooden screen.
Built in 1340 by Altinbugha al-Maridani, a cup-bearer and son-in-law of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad, the mosque is renowned for its lavish decoration. A pierced wooden mashrabiya screens the prayer hall, whose dome rests on ancient granite columns beneath fine stucco and glass mosaic.
