Designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon and opened in 1902 on Tahrir Square, the museum was long home to the world's greatest collection of pharaonic antiquities. Its galleries famously displayed the golden treasures of Tutankhamun, many now moving to the new Grand Egyptian Museum.
