Mosque of Malika Safiyya

A rare Cairo mosque endowed in the name of an Ottoman queen mother.

Completed in 1610, this mosque was endowed in the name of Safiyya Sultan, the Venetian-born mother of the Ottoman sultan Mehmed III, through her agent in Egypt. Raised on a platform above shops, its domed hall and central plan reflect the imperial mosques of the Ottoman capital.
