Egypt built the first railway in Africa and the Middle East, and by 1892 its main Cairo terminus wore an Islamic-revival face of pointed arches and honey-coloured stone. Generations have poured through it from the Delta and Upper Egypt; for millions it is the first and last image of the capital.
