The Red Mosque whose twin minarets rise straight from the towers of Bab Zuweila.
Built between 1415 and 1421 by Sultan al-Mu'ayyad Shaykh on the site of a prison where he had once been held, the mosque is nicknamed the Red Mosque for its stonework. In a bold stroke its two minarets were planted atop the adjoining Fatimid gate of Bab Zuweila, marrying the two monuments.
