Named for the date a king sailed away — 26 July 1952.
Once King Fuad I Street, the avenue was renamed for 26 July 1952 — the day his son, King Farouk, abdicated and left Egypt from Alexandria three days after the Free Officers’ coup. It runs from the heart of Downtown across the Nile through Zamalek, stitching the old commercial city to the island.
