A prime minister’s street — home to Cairo’s great downtown synagogue.
Named for Adly Yakan Pasha, several times prime minister in the 1920s, the street is best known for the Sha’ar Hashamayim synagogue of 1905 — a monumental reminder of the large, cosmopolitan Jewish community that once helped make Downtown Cairo. Around it run travel agencies, airline offices, and the layered commerce of the old centre.
