The name preserves a former gate, Bab al-Sha'riya, traditionally linked to the Banu Sha'ra who were said to have camped outside the walls here.
As Cairo spread beyond its Fatimid walls new gates like this one marked its edges. The gate has vanished but names the square and the surrounding quarter.
