Bein al-Qasrayn

The name means 'Between the Two Palaces', recalling the vast Fatimid Eastern and Western palaces that once faced each other across this ground.

Under the Fatimids this was a ceremonial parade ground large enough to hold thousands of troops. Naguib Mahfouz borrowed the name for the first novel of his Cairo Trilogy.
