Named Al-Ahram, 'the Pyramids', it was cut as a straight carriage road to the Giza plateau for the 1869 Suez Canal celebrations.
Khedive Ismail had the road laid so visiting royalty, including Empress Eugénie of France, could reach the Pyramids by carriage. It remains the classic tourist approach to Giza.
