Gabalaya Street

The street is named for the Gabalaya, the artificial rock grotto and garden created as part of the khedival landscaping of the island.

The grotto gardens, now home to the Aquarium Grotto, were built in the 19th century as an ornamental landscape. The Arabic name refers to the artificial hills and rockwork.
