Kasr El Aini

After a vanished palace — a name every Egyptian now hears as ‘the hospital.’

The street takes its name from the 15th-century palace of Ahmad ibn al-Ayni that once stood by the Nile. In 1827 Muhammad Ali founded Egypt’s first modern medical school here, and over two centuries Kasr El Aini has become synonymous with the country’s oldest and largest teaching hospital — a place millions know from the hardest days of their lives.
