Mohamed Mahmoud

A short Downtown street named for a prime minister — and heavy with recent memory.

The street honours Mohamed Mahmoud Pasha, a two-time prime minister of the 1920s and 30s. Running from Tahrir past the old American University campus, it is a busy artery of bookstalls and offices — and, in the last decade and a half, a name that carries a much more recent and contested weight in the city’s memory.
