Saray El-Gezira Street

The street takes its name from the Gezira Palace, the royal residence Khedive Ismail built on the island in the 1860s.

Erected to host guests for the Suez Canal opening, the palace later became the core of the landmark Cairo hotel on the site. The street preserves the Arabic word saray, meaning palace.
