Shagaret El-Dor Street

The street honours Shagaret al-Durr, the sultana whose rise to power marked the dawn of the Mamluk era in Egypt.

A rare woman to rule Egypt in her own name, Shagaret al-Durr took the throne in 1250 after the Ayyubid sultan's death. Her legend gives one of Zamalek's central streets its name.
