A khedival palace on Tahrir that became the home of the American University in Cairo.
Originally the palace of Khairy Pasha, built in the 1860s, this ornate building on Tahrir Square became the first home of the American University in Cairo when it opened in 1919. Its carved neo-Islamic portal welcomed students for nearly a century until the university moved to New Cairo in 2008.
