Rising on Opera Square in the Ezbekiya district in the 1890s, the Grand Continental was among Cairo's premier hotels in the colonial era, hosting explorers, diplomats, and film stars. Long shuttered and awaiting restoration, its ornate façade still recalls the vanished world of turn-of-the-century Cairo.
