Complex of Sultan Qalawun

A soaring mausoleum, madrasa, and hospital that crowned Bahri Mamluk Cairo.

Built in just thirteen months in 1284-85 by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun on the avenue of Bayn al-Qasrayn, the complex unites a mausoleum, a madrasa, and a renowned hospital, or maristan, that treated the sick for centuries. Its towering façade and richly inlaid tomb chamber mark the high point of early Mamluk architecture.
