The first Ottoman mosque built in Cairo, tucked within the Citadel walls.
Erected in 1528 by the governor Suleyman Pasha, this is the earliest mosque in Cairo built in the pure Ottoman style, with a domed prayer hall and a slim pencil minaret imported from Istanbul. Its small courtyard and painted interior introduced the new imperial fashion to Egypt soon after the Ottoman conquest.
