The avenue is named for al-Azhar Mosque, whose own name means 'the most radiant', an epithet of Fatima al-Zahra, the Prophet's daughter.
Founded in 970, al-Azhar is one of the oldest universities in the world. The broad avenue was driven through the old city to link it with the western districts.
