Al-Hussein Square

The square is named for the al-Hussein Mosque, revered as the resting place of the head of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

The shrine draws pilgrims year-round and is a centre of Cairo's religious life. The square beside it, facing al-Azhar, fills with worshippers on feast nights.
