Al-Khalig al-Masri

The name means 'The Egyptian Canal', for the ancient waterway that carried Nile floodwater through the city until it was filled in at the end of the 19th century.

For centuries the canal was a lifeline whose annual opening was a great festival. When it was filled around 1899 the road laid over it kept the old name.
