The bazaar is named for Emir Jaharkas al-Khalili, whose 14th-century khan (merchants' inn) gave its name to the whole surrounding market.
A khan was a caravanserai where travelling merchants lodged and stored goods. Khan al-Khalili grew into Cairo's most famous bazaar for crafts, copper, gold and souvenirs.
