Street · Al-Darb al-Ahmar, Islamic Cairo

Souk al-Selah

The name means 'Weapons Market', for the swordsmiths and armourers who once traded along this street.

Medieval Cairo grouped its trades into specialised markets, and arms were sold here near the Citadel that consumed them. The name survived long after the trade dispersed.
